PCT SECTION HIKE | DAY 2 Kennedy Canyon Creek to Dorothy Lake

Miles Hiked: 9.8 miles
Elevation: 1413 ft ascent | 1052 ft descent

I was out of camp by 0700. The goal for the day is Dorothy Lake, just pass Dorothy Lake Pass and officially in Yosemite. There has been very little traffic on the trail today, only seeing 1-2 northbound hikers every two hours or so. No new southbound hikers so far. Today’s hike was dry and hot from the Sierra sun, with few water sources and many exposed areas. There has been more shade than yesterday, but I am already exhausted at the start of the day. The first part of the day was mostly downhill, with the occasional small uphill. The second half of the day ended with two bigger climbs to get to Dorothy Lake Pass.

I stopped for lunch at Cascade Creek, soaking my feet and assessing any hot spots or blisters. After lunch, it was time for the last climb. This last section reminded me a lot of the final climb up to Marie Lakes—small switchbacks and lots of rocks. Just before reaching the top, Dan caught up with me. We hiked the next mile or so looking for camp along the lake. Most of the desirable spots were taken or very exposed to the wind, and there was little else. We ended up pitching our tents at the stock campsite—a stunning spot with a little protection from the wind.

Wind.

The best thing I could ask for today because it meant no mosquitoes by the lake! I set up my tent and went straight to the water to soak my feet. 3 blisters. The hotspot from yesterday turned into a blister, and after removing the old leukotape it turned into a blood blister. The other two were on my toes. Same spots I tend to get blisters (which isn’t often). After tending to my feet, I spent the next hour or so relaxing in my tent, until a ranger came by to check permits and bear cans. We ate dinner around 1830 and talked about plans for the next day. Wilma Lake is 9.2 miles away, all downhill. It sounded like it would be a great location for camp, but I was hoping to do another mile or two. Looking more into Guthook, the original location I planned wouldn’t be ideal. The plan right now is to hike to Wilma and talk to people hiking northbound, and potentially the ranger if they are nearby. Water is the biggest issue. The next spot (Stubblefield Canyon Creek) has a bear hanging around based on comments. There is also a small lightning fire nearby that is being managed.
